Pinot Noir 2023
The first iteration of Pinot Noir from Geoff Hardy's K1 Vineyard. A selection of 3 clones- 115 (60%), D5V12 (20%), Mariafeld (20%).
With a smoky profile and dense structure, it’s sombre and intimate. 60% (115 Clone) was carbonically macerated as whole bunches, pushing structure and delivering power. The remaining 40% was de-stemmed and whole berry fermented to provide lift and vibrancy.
The majority of the wine nested on its fine lees for 12 months, while a portion aged in a second-year Billon Vosges medium-toast French oak puncheon. This complemented its structure, and emphasised that moody, smokey direction.
Winemaker's Notes:
I personally love whole bunch in Pinot, which may seem a little greedy in influence towards the fruit, but I see it as fingerprint in style.
As there won’t be a 2024 vintage due to low yields, I’d recommend holding onto some, as it will only continue to develop in generosity from here on.
